Ayurveda Explained

Learn how to take care of your unique body/mind makeup

Ayurveda is a natural system of medicine that has been practiced for over 5,000 years, originating in India.

Ayurveda translated means the Science of Longevity which focuses on finding the root cause to our symptoms, creating balance within the body and mind and maintaining that balance in order to find and live out our higher intended purpose.

This science utilizes the five universal elements that we are all familiar with and that make up all of creation. The ancient Vedas realized that our bodies mimicked the energetic qualities of these elements and that they directly correlated with the functions and make up of our bodies.

Here is an example of one specific quality per element but there are many for each: Space (cold), Air (light), Water (wet), Fire (hot) and Earth (heavy).

They further categorized these elements into what's known as the three Doshas (body/mind types): Vata (air and space) relating to the functions of movement and communication within our body and mind on both an expressive (thoughts/speech) and cellular (circulation/peristalsis) level. Pitta (fire with a pinch of water) is responsible for our digestion and metabolism. Not only digestion of the food we eat and environmental pollutants that we inhale, but also the ability to digest and integrate (metabolize) new information and experiences. And Kapha (earth and water) which is responsible for our lubrication, structure (bones and muscles) and strength (immunity). Each of these doshas or mind/body types also relate to certain behavioral and dis-ease tendencies. Learn more here.

We all have these elements in our bodies, just at different levels, which makes us all unique in size and personality.

However, if these elemental levels specific to our body/mind type get too high or low we may start to see symptoms such as allergies, chronic fatigue, anxiety, weight gain, mental instability and digestive problems to name a few (and I mean a few).

The ancients were well aware that in order to have a healthy abundant life you needed to focus on more than just the body.

Your state of mind and level of consciousness (spiritual awareness) can have a much larger effect on your health than merely the food or exercise you give to your body.
